Jason Aaron Baca acrylics mini painting

Jason Aaron Baca acrylics mini painting

I did this little study in acrylics, and I guess the texture in the canvas, as well as the small size (which made the texture bigger in proportion) made it a very difficult painting to scan or photograph! So I took my scan (which had a lot of reflected canvas texture) and fiddled with some filters in Photoshop, in hopes of bringing out the painting and minimizing the canvas texture. This attempt is only partially successful in doing that. Another notable thing about this painting is that it was painted with the Zorn Palette, which is a limited palette consisting of only White, Vermillion (Cadmium Red Light will do), Black (often Ivory Black), and Yellow Ochre. I write more about the Zorn Palette on my main site. You can see another picture of the painting (which I took with my mobile phone, ironically) on my main site’s blog, which escaped capturing all the canvas texture, but still (I think) made the colors too harsh. Classic Male Portrait (WIP)

Classic Male Portrait (WIP)

Another Work in Progress! I posted this on Facebook but since this site is more for day-to-day blogging, I’m posting it here! I have about a half hour or 45 minutes into this piece so far. I liked the spontaneity of it (so far). I usually end up overworking a painting, so wanted to document how it looked before I messed it all up! Another notable thing about this painting is that it’s my first experiment with using a Trekell “Linen Wrapped Panel.” This is quite unique (at least for what I’m used to) and I’m really liking it! It’s a cradled wood panel with linen stretched over and stapled on the backside (like a regular stretched canvas, but there’s a wood backing to support the canvas). I really like it! I bought some samples of the various other flavors of panels from Trekell. I hope they continue to sell these, because I think they’re fabulous! White cat with black spot on its nose (WIP)

White cat with black spot on its nose (WIP)

Since this is my more “day-to-day” blog, I’m posting a work in progress (“WIP”) of this cat. I do a lot of cat portraits (aka “Cat Heads”). I don’t think there is much more to do with this one, probably a few tweaks. I used a photo from “Paint My Photo” as reference and I’ll credit the photographer as soon as the painting is completed. Micah, a portrait from life, still unfinished

Micah, a portrait from life, still unfinished

Micah is a fellow artist, and buddy to Daniel (whose portrait can be seen in this previous post). I sometimes attend a fellow artists’ painting group, where we meet each week to paint models from life. We were always seeking new models, so I suggested that Micah (and Daniel) pose. Here is my effort for that evening. I started out painting it from life, but did some more work from photos that I had taken. I don’t know how much more work I’ll do on this painting, but hopefully it’s mostly done. It’s been waiting to be completed for about a year! It’s time to finally finish it! Interestingly, fellow artist Adam Clague (who has also been a teacher of mine—I’m a big Adam Clague fangirl!) did a wonderful portrait of Micah, which can be seen here on his website. Some portrait sketches from life

Some portrait sketches from life

For my second post, I present a few sketches from life. The above portrait is of Pavina, a favorite model and fellow artist. This probably isn’t a very good likeness of her—she looks sullen here! During a group drawing session, we took a break from drawing the regular model (nude) to have one of the fellow artists pose for a few minutes. Daniel graciously posed and I did this little sketch of him. Some figure drawings for my first post

Welcome to my site! To start things out, here are some figure drawings from about a year ago. I love figure drawing as I think it’s essential to keep improving your skills.
